Lori Perkins M.ED. – Piano & Songwriting

Lori Perkins

Performance History
Throughout high school, Lori performed as a vocalist in musicals, jazz bands and church and school choirs.  In 1990, she began performing mostly on the Hammond organ in a number of Boston bands.

As a professionally performing keyboardist, she has traveled all over New England and beyond.  She has recorded and released four full length CD’s, been on a number of music compilations, received a Boston Music Award, and has been nominated multiple times for best keyboardist in Boston.  Her recordings have been used on MTV’s “Real World Paris” and “Road Rules”.  She continues to perform regularly in many stylistically diverse bands.  Currently, her main project is the band What Time Is It Mr.Fox?” which performs regularly in Boston and is currently working on it’s second full length release and a music video.

Education

Lori began playing piano at 6 and studied continuously throughout her college years.  She has also studied voice, flute and guitar.  Lori spent her first year of college at Indiana University studying piano and music composition.  She then transferred to the Berklee College of Music in Boston, receiving her degree and certification in Music Education, K-9.  She also holds a masters degree and certification in Special Education, K-9 and Elementary Education, 1-6.

Employment

Lori’s educational career began at the Medfield After School Program (MAP).  Concurrently, she gave private piano lessons to students in their homes in Medfield, MA.  She also taught children with special needs at Camp Echo Bridge in Newton, MA.

Opening Medfield Makes Music

In 2003, Lori decided to fulfill her dream of opening a  music studio where she could expand the scope of music education she was already providing to her private piano students.  She has created an environment for the learning and exploration of playing music.  Resources include a listening library, a music book library and internet access.  The school teaching staff has grown, allowing it to offer the study of many different instruments.  Students previously studying in   isolation are given the opportunity to play with others in duets, small groups and bands.

Continued Education

Lori continues to take lessons and learn more as a musician.  She would not bring a teacher to MMM that she would not study with herself.  Since the opening of MMM, she has taken guitar, drum, piano and violin lessons from MMM teachers and has enjoyed them fully.  She is still primarily a pianist/organist but what she has learned from her teachers on these secondary instruments has truly made her a better musician.

“ There is no better way to spend your day than teaching and playing music.  My growth as a performer inspires my teaching and my students inspire me as a player.  I am renewed every day as I watch young minds grapple with, master, and then redefine music.  There is nothing more wonderful than a child at an instrument.  You never know what will happen next.”
